Saint Gilbert
By Coline Duvall

T his Knight belonged to the high nobility of Auvergne. The feast of the Saint is celebrated on June 7th while at a time when the Norbert and the Gilbert were many, each needed a day of Holiness. Norbert won the June 6 and so Gilbert was celebrated one day later.

Gilbert took part, with Louis VII, in the second crusade which the failure was resounding. This was in part due to the sins of the Crusaders. It is on his return from crusade he decided with his wife and daughter to live a Holy life.

Gilbert then retired to Neuffontaines, in a wet land and desert region. He founded there in 1150 a monastery, where he built a hospital and he healed the sick people. He built a second in Aubeterre, located in the Diocese of Clermont, for his wife Sainte Péronelle, and her daughter, Poncia. After her mother’s death, Poncia herself led the monastery.

He will then travel to Dilo, Yonne, to receive from his spiritual father, Arnulphe, abbot prémontré, the habit of the order. He then left again with a few brothers and became Abbot. He will exercise his Office for one year only because he died on June 6th 1152.

Faithful to Saint Norbert charisma, he built a hospital which quickly became famous for all the miracles Gilbert accomplished.
